Head of Maintenance | Kalahari | Luxury Safari Destination

We are looking for experienced HEAD OF MAINTENANCE to become part of a dedicated team responsible for South Africa’s largest privately protected conservation area.

Role Summary

The Head of Maintenance oversees the planning, execution, and upkeep of infrastructure, utilities, technical systems, and environmental technologies. This includes solar power, water treatment, air conditioning, and fire safety. The role ensures that all engineering services support guest comfort while aligning with conservation priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure & Facility Maintenance
  • Lead proactive, preventative, and reactive maintenance of all buildings, guest accommodations, staff quarters, and communal facilities.
  • Oversee civil works and infrastructure upgrades using eco-sensitive construction principles.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, safety, and environmental regulations.
Fleet & Equipment Management
  • Manage servicing and functionality of reserve and hospitality vehicles (4x4s, tractors, game viewers, etc.).
  • Oversee machinery, tools, water pumps, solar systems, generators, and boreholes.
Utilities & Systems Oversight
  • Supervise all power systems (solar PV, generators, battery banks).
  • Manage water supply (boreholes, purification, storage) and waste systems (greywater recycling, sewage).
  • Maintain HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, and IT infrastructure.
Team Management
  • Lead and develop the technical and maintenance team (plumbers, electricians, handymen, etc.).
  • Ensure training, motivation, and high performance.
  • Oversee routine schedules and emergency response protocols.
Sustainability & Conservation
  • Collaborate with conservation staff to minimize ecological footprint.
  • Optimize energy and water efficiency across operations.
  • Implement green building practices and track system performance.
Budgeting & Procurement
  • Prepare and manage the annual maintenance budget.
  • Oversee procurement aligned with sustainability goals.
  • Monitor stock levels and manage assets effectively.
Health & Safety Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to occupational health and safety standards.
  • Identify risks and implement preventative safety measures for staff, guests, and wildlife.
  • Support talent development through partnerships with education providers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/electrical/civil engineering (or related).
  • 7+ years in a senior engineering/maintenance role; hospitality background advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable technologies (solar, water filtration, off-grid utilities).
  • Proven leadership and project management skills.
  • Valid driver’s license; willingness to live on-site in a remote environment.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities.

Personal Characteristics

  • Experience in luxury safari lodge or eco-resort environments is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with conservation-driven operations.
  • Proactive, hands-on, and solution-oriented.
  • Adaptable and resilient in remote or challenging settings.
  • Committed to sustainability and responsible resource use.
  • Able to work flexible hours, including availability for emergencies.
